Projects

  • Upon invitation KRASS contributed with the elaboration of a chapter called „Is sustainable agriculture possible in an unstable environment?” within the GTZ/BMZ booklet The Aral Sea Disaster – From Crisis-dwelling to Problem-solving. The chapter describes the results of the ZEF project based on 6 years of research in the Khorezm region, which is part of the Irrigated lowlands of the AmuDarya river and thus part of the Aral Sea Basin This booklet was mandated by the German GTZ.
  • Project entitled “Watercone® Pilot project for Khorezm, Uzbekistan” is envisaged for the period of 6 months (July – December, 2009) and is supported by Russell Trust Development Award from the University of St Andrews and the Unicorn Cooperative in Manchester, UK. This project aims to provide aid in efforts to improve public health situation directly affected by poor water quality in the remote areas of the country. It is planned to purchase 135 watercone devices and to distribute them among the selected households of the tail end of the Amu Darya catchment area, characterized by high poverty and low access to quality water both for drinking and irrigation.
  • Project entitled “Dissemination of resource-saving technologies for sustainability of irrigated agriculture in the Khorezm region, Uzbekistan” with the duration of 18 months (01.07.2009-31.12.2010) is mandated by the Small Grants Program, UNDP. The project aims at livelihood improvement of the population via their adaptation to the changing environment and via increasing their capacities to cope with soil degradation and irrational water use in agriculture of Khorezm with the use of resource conserving technologies. Project tasks include: preparation of equipment for laser levelling of land; demonstration of the advantages of laser levelling and alternative irrigation methods; teaching agricultural producers how to conduct laser levelling and to reduce water use for irrigation.
